Diamondbacks Named as Dark Horse in Jordan Montgomery Chase

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery (52) reacts on the mound after a home run hit by Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (14) during the fourth inning in game two of the 2023 World Series at Globe Life Field on Oct. 28, 2023, in Arlington, Texas.

With Opening Day just around the corner, 2023 World Series champion Jordan Montgomery, a client of the controversial agent Scott Boras, remains a free agent.

But, on the bright side, according to MLB Network Radio’s Jim Bowden, the market for Montgomery is finally getting hot, with multiple teams willing to sign the veteran to a long-term contract.

While Bowden did not specify the exact number of teams showing interest, he identified the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox among the leading contenders vying for Montgomery’s signature. He also mentioned that the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Baltimore Orioles are in the mix as potential suitors.

The Diamondbacks, in particular, are drawing attention due to their recent spate of injury problems. Manager Torey Lovullo announced that Eduardo Rodriguez would miss Opening Day, sidelined on the injured list with a strained left lat. Adding to their woes, closer Paul Sewald sustained an oblique strain less than a week before Opening Day, further depleting their pitching depth.

Diamondbacks General Manager Mike Hazen, who has been active in the free agent market this offseason, hinted at the possibility of making another acquisition. In comments reported by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, Hazen expressed ongoing interest in the free agent market but refrained from naming specific targets to comply with league rules.

Last season, Jordan Montgomery split his time between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers, achieving a 3.20 ERA and striking out 166 batters. His contributions were vital during the Rangers’ journey to winning the World Series, with the team boasting a 4-2 record in games that Montgomery pitched.

Stay tuned for further updates.
