This is major news for the Sun Devils. Shawn Phillips was expected to be a huge part of the team this season. He started the first three games before getting hurt. It has been very noticeable that ASU has missed Phillips, as their rebounding and inside defense have fallen apart since Phillips went down. This is quite frankly because Phillips is the only player over 6’9 on the Sun Devils roster.

Phillips, a former LSU Tiger,  was averaging six rebounds a game before he got hurt. He also averaged 1.3 blocks per game. Alonzo Gaffney was the only other shot blocker the Sun Devils had. So, getting some defense in the paint will help the Sun Devils. The big man will provide an immediate impact as Arizona State starts a crucial Pac-12 play. The Sun Devils have to win many of their games in the conference to have any hope of a tournament birth.

Will Phillips be the missing piece?
