How are the Arizona Cardinals following a bye week?

Following their 24-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 2, the Arizona Cardinals have a chance to recharge as they are currently on a bye week.

With a record of 3-10, however, the chances of the team making the playoffs is slim with only four games left on their schedule.

Cardinals Remaining Schedule

  • vs. San Fransisco 49ers (9-3), Dec. 17
  • at Chicago Bears (4-8), Dec. 24
  • at Philadelphia Eagles (10-2) , Dec. 31
  • vs. Seattle Seahawks (6-6), Jan. 7, 2024

After this week, Arizona have a difficult test ahead as they face the NFC West Division leaders in the 49ers on Dec. 17.

When looking at how the Cardinals have performed following a bye in the past, how do they usually pan out and do the Cardinals stand a chance vs. San Francisco?

History Off a Bye

Last time they did, Arizona lost 27-13 to the New England Patriots on Dec. 12, 2022, the same day when quarterback Kyler Murray suffered an ACL injury.

Even though Murray has played since Nov. 12 this season, the last time the Cardinals were off for a week resulted in an 11-month absence of their biggest stars the next.

In 2021, Murray passed for 123 yards, went 11-15 and threw two touchdowns in a 33-22 win over the Chicago Bears on Dec. 5 that year.

Overall, the Cardinals are 5-6 after returning from a bye since 2012, but have lost four out of their last five games in that scenario.

Games Following Bye Weeks (Since 2012)

  • 2022: 27-13 L  — vs. New England Patriots
  • 2021: 33-22 W — at Chicago Bears
  • 2020: 34-31 L — vs. Miami Dolphins
  • 2019: 34-7 L — vs. Rams
  • 2018: 26-14 L — at Chiefs
  • 2017: 20-10 W — at 49ers
  • 2016: 23-20 W — vs. 49ers
  • 2015: 39-32 W — at Seahawks
  • 2014: 41-20 L  — at Broncos
  • 2013: 27-24 W — vs. Texans
  • 2012: 23-19 L — at Falcons

It will be interesting to see if Arizona will be rusty against San Francisco or if they continue off of the momentum in which they gained after upsetting Pittsburgh.

The 49ers are one of the few Super Bowl favorites as the end of the NFL season approaches, and possess a record of 35-29 against the Cardinals all-time.
