The Winter Meetings have kicked off in Tennessee, setting the stage for intriguing insights into the plans of general managers across the league this offseason.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! While the Diamondbacks are one of a few teams that have already made a move, they have also let it know that the signing of Eugenio Suarez will not be their final move.
With the third baseman slot now filled, the D-backs are redirecting their focus towards fortifying their pitching depth with a starting arm and adding a power-hitting designated hitter to their roster.
According to Jim Bowden at CBS Sports, a name that Arizona has expressed interest in is former Diamondback J.D. Martinez.
The 36-year-old slugger, who earned his third consecutive All-Star nod in 2023, had an impressive season, smashing 33 home runs, notching 103 RBIs, and boasting a robust .572 SLG.
These 33 home runs marked a new high since 2019, so obviously, there is still plenty of pop left in his bat.
Having played for five different teams over his 13-season career, including the Astros, Tigers, Diamondbacks, Red Sox, and currently the Dodgers, Martinez brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of offensive consistency.
As for his time with the D-backs, J.D. played just 1/2 of a season in the desert as he was traded in the middle of July to help the Diamondbacks make a postseason push.
In the 2nd half of the 2017 season, Martinez hit 29 home runs in 62 games, meaning if he stayed on this pace for a full 162-game season, Martinez would have shattered the single-season record with 76.
The home run ball that Martinez offers would be a perfect fit for the Diamondbacks, as they are still looking for that balance of power and speed.
Stay tuned for further updates as the winter meetings continue to roll along.
