The bigger story may be Waldschmidt himself. The young outfielder has quietly become one of Arizona’s brightest developments this season, and his latest heroics are only going to intensify the question fans have been asking: When does he get more playing time? That question also had trade-deadline implications. Waldschmidt was viewed as one of the Diamondbacks’ most untouchable pieces because of the value he represents beyond this season. Arizona isn’t simply evaluating him as a contributor for the current Wild Card chase. The organization sees someone who could be part of its next competitive core.
