PHOENIX – One of the biggest questions surrounding the Diamondbacks isn’t whether Ryan Waldschmidt can make an impact; it’s why Arizona isn’t giving him more chances to prove it.

Will Ryan Waldschmidt get more opportunities for the D-backs?
Ryan Waldschmidt’s walk-off home run against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night reminded everyone of what the young outfielder can bring. It was an electric moment, but for fans, the bigger takeaway was what happened afterward, which is that the calls for more opportunities for Waldschmidt became even louder. Arizona is fighting for a Wild Card spot, meaning every plate appearance carries added importance. Yet Waldschmidt remains part of a crowded outfield that includes Max Kepler, Jordan Lawlar and Jorge Barrosa. Those players all have legitimate reasons to receive opportunities, but Arizona also has to determine which players give it the best combination of present production and future upside.

That is where Waldschmidt becomes particularly interesting. The Diamondbacks reportedly viewed him as one of their most valuable and untouchable young pieces at the trade deadline, a reflection of how highly the organization views his long-term potential. If Arizona believes he can eventually become an important piece of its core, there is an argument for accelerating his development now, especially while the team is competing for October.

Tuesday’s home run only strengthens that case. One walk-off doesn’t automatically justify a permanent starting job. Baseball is too difficult and unpredictable for that. But moments like this can reveal something about a player’s confidence, preparation and ability to handle pressure. For Diamondbacks fans, the frustration isn’t necessarily about the other players receiving opportunities. It’s about wondering whether Waldschmidt has earned more of his own. Arizona’s Wild Card race makes the decision even more important. If the Diamondbacks believe Waldschmidt can be part of their future, giving him meaningful opportunities now could help determine whether that future arrives sooner than expected. Arizona should want to see what happens when Waldschmidt gets the chance to win a bigger role.
