Jose Perez’s Huge Game Brings Second Life to Sun Devils

Five days ago, I truly believed that this Sun Devils team might have a ceiling of winning one game in the conference tournament.

They had no shooting, and their defense was solid, but they fell apart when they faced a team that could shoot. Losing by over 20 points to South Carolina and BYU. Now, however, the shooting has come alive. They have shot 52% from the field in the past two games. However, their three-point shooting remains an issue.

Jose Perez was brought into the Sun Devils system a month ago. Now, he just had his best performance of the season and looks like a true veteran out on the floor. He finished with 24 points and eight rebounds in the game versus Sam Houston State last night.

“He knows his game. It’s just a matter of his teammates and coaches understanding it.” Head Coach Bobby Hurley said postgame last night, “He was very efficient again. He went 9/13. That type of efficiency is important.

Jose Perez has been lauded for his leadership since arriving in Tempe. He’s starting to look like that blue-chip prospect that ASU expected him to be.

“Jose is a great teammate and a great player.” Alonzo Gaffney said in his press conference on Tuesday, “He’s a willing passer. When he first came in, we had one of our best passing practices. All credit to him.”

Perez’s performance last night completely changed the outlook of this Sun Devil season. They look like a team that can make the postseason right now. Can they keep it up?
