Diamondbacks Grab Game Three Against the Cubs in Extras

On Saturday afternoon the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs played their third game of the four game series. Arizona ended up winning the ball game in the top of the tenth inning, scoring twice in extras.

Todays ten inning ball game featured yet another masterclass held by both bullpens. Collectively the Diamondbacks staff surrendered just two runs, one earned, punching out seven hitters and giving up eight hits. Arizona threw a total of five arms, with Merrill Kelly doing the bulk of the work and starting todays affairs. Kelly threw five and two thirds innings, allowing four hits, one earned run, five walks and strikeout six batters. Ginkel recorded the win, his eighth on the year, and closer Paul Sewald grabs his 32nd save on the year.

Chicago’s pitching staff was also throwing well today. Although, it would not be enough to grab the win. Chicago threw four pitchers, Justin Steel started and went seven innings, giving up six hits allowing one earned run, striking out six and not surrendering any walks. As a staff, the Cubs allowed three runs, two earned, eight hits, struck out nine and walked three.

At the plate the Diamondbacks scratched across three runs, two of which came from RBIs. Corbin Carroll was the only Diamondbacks with multiple hits, he singled twice, and scored once. Tommy Pham and Gabriel Moreno both recorded RBIs in the contest.

With the win, how’s the Wildcard race looking?

With todays win Arizona still stands alone in the third place wildcard spot. The Diamondbacks hold a one game lead over the Miami Marlins, who play also play today, against the Phillies. Arizona improves their record to 75-68, and have now won three straight against the Cubs, who are just one game up on the Diamondbacks for the second wildcard spot.

Arizona will play the fourth and final game of the series against the Cubs at 11:20 am PST tomorrow morning, Monday September tenth.
