Despite a losing season, the Mercury have had each others backs

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Brittney Griner’s return to The Valley has been anything but a smooth one. The Mercury are in the midst of its most losing season in franchise history with nine wins and 30 losses. With one remaining game in their season, the Mercury face the No. 1 seeded Las Vegas Aces who they are 0-3 against this season.

After suffering their 10th straight loss on Friday night in a 94-73 loss to the Aces, they run it back with the squad in their season closer on Sunday afternoon.

While the season didn’t meet the team’s initial aspirations, Griner expressed her admiration for her team and the strong bond they maintained throughout the year.

“It’s been a season of trials and tribulations,” Griner said. “I don’t think one time we (weren’t) there for somebody or (tried) to encourage them in some way.”

After her absence during the 2022 season, Griner is rounding out her 2023 return with the Mercury averaging 17.4 points per game, 1.6 blocks, 2.2 assists and 6.4 rebounds.

Griner’s points per game are the lowest they have been since 2016 when she averaged 14.5 points per game. She has had the most underperforming year since her rookie season with the Mercury in total rebounds free throw percentage and minutes played. She also has a career low average blocks this season.

Despite the Mercury’s losing record, ten game losing streak and last place standing in the league, Griner has enjoyed the season with her teammates.

“There’s highs, there’s lows, but we always stuck together I’d say,” Griner said. “I really enjoyed this season (and) this group of ladies. Honestly, it’s been really good with them.”

Mercury fans hope for No. 1 pick: Who will join The Valley?
