Cardinals’ Jonathan Gannon ranked worst head coach in the NFL

As if there was not enough negative press over the Cardinals new head coach, Jonathan Gannon, a recent opinion piece by Gilberto Manzano at Sports Illustrated has Gannon ranked as the worst head coach in the NFL.

Manzano credited recent criticism over Gannon’s motivational speech as seen in the “Cardinals Flight Plan,” along with his performance during Super Bowl LVII regarding the Eagles defense, as reasons why JG is the most interesting/worst coach in the league.

“It’s easy to take shots at Gannon right now for various reasons other than his being a little awkward: The Cardinals appear to have the worst roster in the NFL, and their star quarterback (Kyler Murray) might not play this season because he’s recovering from a knee injury. Also, Gannon is coming off a dreadful Super Bowl performance as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator in the loss against the Chiefs.”

Interestingly, Sean Payton, who was once speculated to be a future coach for the Cardinals, was ranked 16th on the list.

Manzano mentions that Payton no longer has Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees running the offense; instead, it is controversial quarterback Russell Wilson.

Unsurprisingly, reigning Super Bowl champion Andy Reid of the Chiefs claimed the top spot in Manzano’s rankings.

Meanwhile, all three other NFC West coaches made the top 10, showcasing the division’s depth in coaching talent: Kyle Shanahan (5th), Pete Carroll (6th), and Sean McVay (6th).

The odds may appear stacked against Jonathan Gannon and the Cardinals this season. However, low expectations can be a powerful motivator. If they can defy the critics, the Cardinals have the chance to make a statement that resonates across the league.
