My First Time in the Press Box: A Former Player’s Perspective on the Diamondbacks’ Victory

© Rob Schumacher/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

On Monday afternoon I got to experience the game from a perspective I never have before, and it was amazing. For me personally, sitting in the press box really slowed the game down. On the field, I never felt like I was out there for long, the games felt maybe an hour long. You’re so in tune with how you’re personally playing that after an at bat, or an inning in the field, you sit and debrief. In that second however, one or two at bats can go by, and that inning could be over or close to it.

From a media members view point

Being in the press box is completely different. The press box has a different kind of focus, a focus where you really can’t miss anything. For the entirety of the game against the Rockies that featured a Diamondbacks 4-2 win I didn’t move once. I looked up and it was the seventh inning. I have never felt so locked in to everything that is happening in a ball game. I’m a big fan of the game, so it was hard for me to not cheer with the stadium and stay impartial as a media member. My favorite part about being a member of the media is truly caring about a team.

From a fans perspective

Although I was still a spectator it’s just a different feeling than being in the stands watching the game. Early in the year I went to a Diamondbacks game to watch them play the San Diego Padres. It was electric, the Diamondbacks were on a nine game losing streak and snapped it with a win over San Diego. The vibe as a spectator is at Chase Field is awesome, the stadium is beautiful and Diamondbacks fans really get into it.

Essentially, all three stages of the game are very different. playing, watching, and covering. As a baseball fan though, I love seeing the beauty in all three.
