With less than ten games left in the regular season, the chances of making the postseason for the mercury are not looking good. In the Mercury’s first season with Britney Griner back, they are second to last in the league and hold a record of 9-23.

Winning eight of their nine at home, the loyal Phoenix fans keep showing up to support their local team and it is clearly making a difference in how they perform.

“They truly are the best fans,” Sophie Cunningham said. “It’s really easy to not show up when we’re having the season we’re having, but I think they believe in us and they see the fight.”

It was clear during Griner’s absence last season that The Valley’s WNBA fans were among the most supportive fans in the nation. Through murals and posters sprung all over Phoenix, fans never stopped making sure Griner was in the eyes of the public.

“They also just really do care about us as players,” Cunningham said. “It’s a testament to The Valley and the community that we have here and I’m grateful just to have this ‘Mercury’ across my chest.”

The Mercury would need an unfavorable finish from the Sparks, Sky and Storm in order to sneak into the eighth seed and land a spot in the playoffs. They are currently four games behind the eighth place spot and are on a three-game losing streak.

Only three of their final eight games will be home in Footprint Center. The presence of Mercury supporters in the stands is anticipated, cheering for their team with the same unwavering enthusiasm they’ve displayed throughout the entire season.
