Not even throwback jerseys could get the Diamondbacks back in the win column as they suffered a ninth consecutive defeat tonight.

Taking advantage of rookie Ryne Nelson on the mound, the Padres swiftly surged to a commanding 6-1 lead, seemingly securing the game’s fate before the fourth inning ended.

Two two-run home runs, a triple, and a flurry of base hits proved sufficient to force Nelson out of the game after a mere three innings. This marked the second consecutive start in which Ryne Nelson conceded six earned runs within the same three-inning span.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks’ offense maintained its familiar pattern, mirroring what fans have grown accustomed to over the past month. This evening’s game marked the 13th consecutive instance in which Arizona managed to score five runs or fewer.

Following Christian Walker’s double in the opening inning, the Diamondbacks struggled to muster another hit until Ketel Marte’s solo home run in the sixth.

Although the D-backs managed to narrow the gap in the 8th inning with a three-run blast from Tommy Pham, the effort would ultimately prove to be too little too late.

The Padres would quickly answer to this three-run shot with a loud top of the ninth inning. Once again, it was the middle of the Padres lineup that was too much for reliever Scott McGough. The three runs scored in the top of the ninth inning served as the final blow, sealing the Diamondbacks’ fate.

With this loss, not only are the D-backs on a nine-game skid, but they have won just three games in their last 20.

First pitch for game two of their series against the Padres will be tomorrow at 5:10.
