The Diamondbacks traded for Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in a package deal back in December. It may go down as one of their best moves of the decade based on how it has played out thus far.
It would be the 29-year-old’s first appearance in an All-Star game, and it is well deserved.
So far this season, Gurriel Jr. has a batting average over .300 through 55 games. In this span, he has 10 home runs, 39 RBIs, 17 doubles, and a .895 OPS.
Additionally, his 32 hits in May were enough to get him placed on the MLB’s team of the month.
While there is still plenty of time before the All-Star game on July 11th, Gurriel Jr. has likely at the very least solidified a spot as a backup on the National League team.
If the voting stood as it is today, Gurriel would be in the outfield with NL MVP leader Ronald Acuna Jr. and Mookie Betts.
And, for the Diamondbacks, if anyone were to replace Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the outfield, it would have to be rookie sensation Corbin Carroll, who is also near the top of just about every hitting category.
