A lot of things are happening in the Phoenix Suns organization as they just brought in all-star and future hall-of-fame player Kevin Durant from the Brooklyn Nets during last Thursday’s trade deadline.

But that’s not going to stop the Suns from exploring other options, especially this offseason when it comes to the free agent market as they appear to be interested in Toronto Raptors point guard Fred VanVleet according to Jake Fischer.

“Phoenix had already contacted rival teams about other ball-handlers on the February trade market, sources said, and were one team that was expected by league personnel to pursue Fred VanVleet if he truly reaches unrestricted free agency this summer.”

With Chris Paul turning 37 years old, it makes sense for the Suns to look to get younger at the position and Fred VanVleet has been a player that’s been improving ever since he went undrafted by the Raptors back in 2016.

This season, VanVleet has been top 15 in estimated plus/minus this season amongst point guards trailing just behind Chris Paul at 11. His most underrated attribute is his facilitating without turning the ball over which he ranks 80th percentile in keeping the ball out of harm’s way.

Another part of his game that doesn’t get enough love is his defense. He’s 85th percentile in steal percentage and an above-average perimeter defender this season ranking in the 74th percentile. This along with his volume shooting would be a great matchup next to Devin Booker and Kevin Durant for the future.

RIght now it’s just rumors and only time will tell what the Suns end up doing. For right now the Suns are looking to make or break a special season as they’ve just put all their chips on the table to try and win a championship.
