The two-time Gold medal Olympian was found guilty on Thursday as she gave her final remarks to prosecutors and the court in Russia.

“I made an honest mistake and I hope that in your ruling that it doesn’t end my life here,” stated Brittney to the court on Thursday.

As reports have developed, it appears the Phoenix Mercury sentence will face those nine years.

According to multiple outlets, Russian prosecutors had been pushing for a nine-year sentence for Griner.

Griner has been detained in Russia since February. The 31-year-old was arrested at an airport in Moscow after security found cannabis oil in her vape cartridges.

Griner’s defense team had made several arguments for her. One said argument was the cannabis being for medicinal reasons while also stating her rights weren’t explained after being detained.

Griner has received backing on a national level since her arrest in. She’s had teammates — both Russian and American — show their support for Griner during her trial.

President Biden and his admin had offered a prisoner swap for Griner in July, but it remains to be seen if that offer could still be viable.

Stay tuned for more details.
