TEMPE –The final rotation player from the beginning of last season for Arizona State men’s basketball has entered the transfer portal. Freshman forward Amier Ali told ESPN’s Jeff Borzello that he would enter the portal, becoming the ninth ASU player to venture into the transfer portal. With the news of Ali’s likely departure, the Sun Devils have none of the opening-day rotation players in the program.

In his freshman campaign at ASU, Ali showcased impressive flashes of his potential against elite competition, notably at Texas Tech, where he dropped 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 5.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 0.8 assists in 32 games last year.

Ali had offers from Alabama, Kentucky, and Texas before joining head coach Bobby Hurley’s squad. The program now only has freshman guard Trevor Best as the lone remnant of the 2024 Sun Devils, with the others leaving via graduation or the transfer portal.

Hurley did add impactful players in the transfer portal for ASU, including forward Allen David Mukeba, forward Marcus Adams Jr., and guard Moe Odum. However, losing a young prospect like Ali hurts and is just another sting to a rough offseason for the program.
