PHOENIX — Just weeks after coming off the injured list, Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed pitcher Corbin Burnes is going back on it.

According to Arizona Central’s Nick Piecoro, Burnes will be placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. The pitcher was scheduled to pitch Saturday against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.
This is only the latest in a series of injury setbacks for Burnes since undergoing Tommy John surgery that ended his 2025 season midway through. While he was set to return in the latter half of the summer this year, a teres major strain delayed his return even further.

Burnes finally made his season debut Sept. 8 against the Kansas City Royals on the road, but an alarming and evident decline in the velocity of his cutter made analysts and fans wonder if perhaps he wasn’t quite ready to return.
The right-hander’s cutter topped around 92 mph in his return, but topped around 95 last year.
In just three games, Burnes posted a 7.84 ERA through 10⅓ innings with a 1.55 WHIP. His toughest outing came against the Yankees last weekend, when he gave up four earned runs on three home runs.

Now, it’s another blow for the Diamondbacks as they enter the final weekend of the season still in the fight for a postseason spot. Burnes’ last-minute absence will force the D-backs to go with another pitcher or bring someone up to fill that role.
While the club has not yet confirmed what it will do, losing another high-caliber pitcher at this point in the season puts even more pressure on a team that could be eliminated with little to no room for error.
