PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have made a season out of refusing to stay down. On Monday night, they added another chapter, rallying from a late deficit before Corbin Carroll delivered the final blow.

Carroll launched a two-run, walk-off home run in the ninth inning, lifting the D-Backs to an 8-7 comeback win over the Miami Marlins and keeping Arizona within 2.5 games of the San Diego Padres for the final National League wild-card spot. It was the outfielder’s second walk-off home run, but its timing made it even more meaningful for a club that has repeatedly refused to let difficult games get away.
The D-Backs trailed by three runs twice before rallying for their 45th comeback victory of the season, the most in MLB.
That ability to fight back has become part of Arizona’s identity, and Carroll’s blast put the Snakes in some rare company.

The D-Backs now have four walk-off home runs this season while trailing, including Ketel Marte’s against the San Francisco Giants in May and Ryan Waldschmidt’s two August walk-off homers against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. They tie the 2006 Cincinnati Reds and the 2014 Chicago White Sox for the most such home runs in a season in major league history.
The number says plenty about the way Arizona has won games. They may not always dominate from the opening pitch, but they have found ways to hang around, withstand deficits and deliver when the game is on the line.
These moments have become a defining part of their year.

Against Miami, Jordan Lawlar’s two-run homer in the eighth inning helped cut the deficit to one run. Lars Nootbaar added three hits and a home run, and Gabriel Moreno opened the ninth inning with a walk before Carroll’s decisive hit.
At this point in the season, those types of wins become even more valuable.
With a red-hot San Diego team riding an eight-game winning streak, Arizona has little room for mistakes. Every loss is a blow, but every comeback keeps them alive.
