PHOENIX — A year ago, Dillon Brooks didn’t make ESPN’s NBA player rankings. Now, after his first season in Phoenix, the Suns forward has cracked the Top 100.

Brooks landed at No. 76 after his best offensive season and helping lead Phoenix to a playoff berth after preseason predictions gave them little chance.
The forward was one of the main catalysts on both ends of the floor, coming to the Valley in a trade that sent star Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets. Alongside Devin Booker, he wasted little time finding his footing and making his mark, averaging a career-best 20.2 points per game.
But the numbers only tell part of the story.

The forward’s physical defense, toughness and willingness to take on difficult assignments have been a foundation for a team trying to establish itself after a period defined by star power and roster changes. Brooks was a scorer, but he also set the tone for how Phoenix wanted to play.
The Suns have leaned into that identity to build their next era.
Phoenix rewarded that effort by signing Brooks to a three-year extension, showcasing that his value extends beyond what the box score shows. His career year has only added to his persona — the villain who doesn’t back down against anyone, no matter who’s on the other side — while making his personality an even bigger part of Phoenix’s identity.

Booker may be Phoenix’s centerpiece, but Brooks represents something just as important. He’s a veteran who can establish standards, elevate those around him and bring an edge to a team looking to build something sustainable.
A year after ESPN left him unranked, Brooks has forced the national media to view him as a top contributor. No. 76 may be where ESPN has him today, but for Phoenix, his importance goes beyond a number on a list.

Brooks helped give the Suns an identity in his first season. Now, as Phoenix continues in its new era, he’ll have the opportunity to help make sure that identity sticks.
