PHOENIX – As the 2026-27 NBA Preseason lurks right around the corner on the calendar, the Phoenix Suns could have an X-factor sitting on their bench that few people are talking about. Rookie forward Koa Peat has a legitimate opportunity to become one of the more important pieces of Phoenix’s season.

Can Koa Peat shine for the Phoenix Suns in his rookie year?
Over this past offseason, the noise surrounding Koa Peat is that his minutes for the Suns’ rotation might actually be more than some anticipated, as he is practicing and fighting his way into getting those opportunities. Peat probably won’t walk into Phoenix and immediately receive a major role, but that doesn’t mean his opportunity will remain limited. Young players often earn trust one possession at a time. A strong defensive rotation, a timely rebound, a confident three, or simply making the correct decision can turn a few minutes into a larger role.

That is where Peat becomes particularly interesting for Phoenix. If he consistently takes advantage of those opportunities, his minutes could steadily increase as the season progresses. The Suns don’t necessarily need him to become a star immediately, they need him to prove he belongs. Growing up in Gilbert, Arizona, becoming a star at Perry High School, and then staying home to play for the University of Arizona, has made Koa Peat a recognizable name in the Valley. As a freshman, he helped lead the Wildcats to a Final Four appearance, giving him meaningful high-pressure experience before even entering the NBA. Now comes the difficult part: earning minutes against established NBA players.

If he does, Phoenix could discover a piece that changes the equation around its established core. For Arizona fans, there’s another layer. Peat isn’t simply another rookie, as he is a player who grew up in the state and became a Final Four-caliber player at Arizona. The bigger question isn’t whether Peat starts the season with a major role. It’s whether Phoenix realizes how much of an X-factor it may have before the season is over.
