PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks fans held their breath at Chase Field and online as Corbin Carroll and Ildemaro Vargas collided during Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs.

The play occurred in the top of the sixth inning when Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki hit a fly ball between right field and second base. Both players charged toward the ball and called for it, but collided as they attempted to make the catch. Carroll landed on the grass, while Vargas went down hard and Suzuki advanced to second base.
The stadium collectively gasped as both players took time to get back on their feet. Manager Torey Lovullo and a trainer went out to check on Vargas. Carroll and Vargas remained in the game, but that didn’t stop D-Backs fans from reacting to the collision and the health of two of the club’s most important players.

Both players eventually returned to their positions, giving fans in the stadium and those watching online some relief. The collision, however, served as a reminder of how quickly a routine fly ball can turn into a frightening moment, particularly when two key players are involved.
The biggest takeaway was that Carroll and Vargas were able to remain in the game, but the hope is that when the game ends that there won’t be lingering injuries as Arizona continues to power through the final stretch of the year.
