PHOENIX — Another scary moment unfolded at Chase Field on Tuesday night, this time involving Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Jordan Lawlar.

Lawlar, who had just returned after recovering from a hamstring injury that had kept him out for two months, was at the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning against Chicago Cubs reliever Daniel Palencia. Palencia threw a 98.5 mph fastball that hit Lawlar in the head.
The impact broke the side of Lawlar’s helmet, leaving him on the ground for several moments before he eventually got up under his own power.
It was the second scary moment of Tuesday’s matchup involving the D-Backs, leaving Chase Field holding its breath once again.

Earlier in the game, Corbin Carroll and Ildemaro Vargas were involved in a collision that, while concerning, did not force either player to leave the game. Lawlar’s situation was more serious, as he was removed from the game following the hit-by-pitch.
The moment is especially concerning given Lawlar’s injury history throughout his major league career. Earlier this year, he fractured his right wrist after being hit by a pitch, while his recent hamstring injury had kept him sidelined for months.

Now, the focus will be on Lawlar’s condition and whether he suffered a concussion or another injury.
For a player who has already dealt with significant time away from the field, the hope is that Tuesday’s scary moment does not result in another lengthy absence.
