GLENDALE – The 2025 season was supposed to be a breakout season for Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson. With the injury to James Conner in Week 3, Benson was viewed to be RB1 for the rest of the season. However, following a knee injury on Thursday Night Football vs. the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4, Benson was quickly placed on IR and never got the opportunity to return.

The mystery was never truly answer until Benson appeared on the Caps Off Podcast to discuss about what happened and why he didn’t return during last year.

Benson takes the blame for not returning:

Earlier in the podcast, Benson mentioned following the Seahawks game his knee was swollen and had to wait for the swelling to go down before working back onto the field. Once it did, the former third-round pick shoulders the blame and says he worked to hard to get back and suffered a setback. It was reported that Benson did have arthroscopic meniscus surgery.

A typically return to sports following that type of procedure is three to nine months. If Benson had the surgery following Week 4, he would return at the earliest in Week 16. Those aspirations never came to fruition, as he pushed himself too far, but also the team was 3-11 at the time and no real point of returning.

The journey doesn’t get easier for Benson, who returns to the field with three other starting-caliber running backs on the Cardinals. Jeremiyah Love, Tyler Allgeier and Conner all have a case to be the Week 1 starter, with Benson’s lack of production and injury history making him the odd man out. At only 23 years old, he still has plenty of time left to prove himself as an NFL running back and doesn’t want to view 2025 as a forever missed opportunity.
