Monday’s win over the Giants was significant for the Diamondbacks, with the outfielder going 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI — along with two stolen bases.

According to Diamondbacks on SI’s Alex D’Agostino, Waldschmidt became the first rookie in franchise history to record at least two doubles and two stolen bases in the same game. He is also just the third MLB rookie to accomplish the feat since 2016.

The D-Backs have spent part of their latest stretch searching for consistency from the bottom of their order without relying heavily on their top hitters. With Waldschmidt’s call-up, they have received exactly that, as his surge and the rest of the bottom of the lineup have also caught fire.

That added production has become increasingly important for Arizona as opposing teams continue to pitch carefully around the heart of the lineup. Secondary scoring and pressure on the bases can help extend innings, create matchup problems and generate offense even when the club’s top bats are quiet.

Arizona’s offense has been at its best when it pressures opposing pitchers with speed and aggressive baserunning — a formula that has worked over the last three seasons. Waldschmidt’s ability to leg out doubles and create scoring opportunities has added another dimension to the lineup while also bringing more energy to the offense.

While one game doesn’t guarantee long-term success, it does showcase the athletic, high-energy style of baseball the Snakes want to play. If Waldschmidt can continue providing offense from the bottom of the order, Arizona may have found an important catalyst while the season is still young.
