DENVER – For years, Ketel Marte has been one of the key factors that made the Arizona Diamondbacks’ offense work. His combination of contact, patience, and power turned him into one of Major League Baseball’s most complete hitters. That history is exactly why manager Torey Lovullo continues to trust him in the leadoff spot entering this weekend’s series against the Colorado Rockies, although is that the right decision? With baseball being built on timing, rhythm, and adjustment, Marte simply does not look like the same hitter Arizona fans are used to seeing right now.

Through 158 at-bats in 2026, Marte owns a .215 batting average and a .271 on-base percentage. For most hitters, those numbers would be disappointing. For a player expected to set the tone at the top of the lineup, they become impossible to ignore. The leadoff role is not just about star power; it is about creating pressure, reaching base, and forcing pitchers to work immediately.

The difficult part for Arizona is balancing patience with urgency. Marte’s track record suggests he is capable of breaking out at any moment. Players with his resume do not suddenly forget how to hit. Yet contenders cannot afford to wait forever, especially in a crowded National League playoff picture where every series matters.
Marte is still not our best leadoff batter. Prove me wrong…..please!!!

– Starting pitchers have been doing well, keep that up and let’s get our bats going and we’ll be golden— Arizona Sports Hype (@HypeArizona) May 15, 2026

If the struggles continue, the most logical adjustment may not be drastic. Moving Marte down one or two spots could reduce pressure while still keeping his bat in the middle of the order. That would also open the door for Corbin Carroll, whose speed and energy naturally fit the leadoff role. Geraldo Perdomo presents another option because of his improving plate discipline and ability to work counts. For Diamondbacks fans, this situation is bigger than one player’s slump. It is about whether Arizona is willing to make difficult decisions in pursuit of October baseball.
