The moves reflect a growing emphasis on fit and identity as the Mercury build around a veteran core led by Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper and DeWanna Bonner. That trio has helped guide the club’s transition toward a more defensive identity and positionless style of play.

Ayayi, a 6-foot-1 forward and two-time Olympic medalist with France, brings length and two-way ability to the wing. Her international résumé includes multiple Olympic and EuroBasket appearances, but her value lies in her versatility. She has developed into a defender capable of guarding multiple positions, while also contributing on the glass and facilitating offense — traits that align with the Mercury’s emphasis on ball movement and defensive pressure.

Ayayi is also familiar with Thomas, as the two were teammates in the EuroLeague with USK Praha.

Brochant, meanwhile, offers a different but equally valuable skill set. The 5-11 forward has emerged as a reliable perimeter shooter in France’s top league, pairing efficiency from beyond the arc with active defense. Her ability to stretch the floor could prove important for an offense that often operates through Thomas in the half-court.

While Brochant faces an uphill climb to secure a roster spot, Phoenix’s decision to look to international talent reflects the broader impact of the WNBA’s newest collective bargaining agreement. Increased salaries and improved player support have made the league a more attractive destination for overseas talent.

For Phoenix, the focus is on adding players who not only bring experience but also fit alongside established stars and the team’s evolving system.

The additions signal a clear direction: surrounding established veterans with complementary, system-driven talent as the Mercury continue to shape their identity heading into the 2026 season.
