Hall of Famer Charles Barkley has never been shy about sharing his basketball opinions. Now he’ll bring that voice to Dayton, where he will join longtime college basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale to call a First Four matchup Tuesday — a crossover between two Hall of Fame personalities whose voices have helped shape how fans experience the game.
For those in the Valley, Barkley’s presence in the sport still hits deeper.

Before becoming a national television analyst, Barkley was part of one of the most iconic chapters in Phoenix Suns history. Acquired in a trade before the 1992-93 season, the star forward immediately transformed the franchise.
Barkley won the NBA Most Valuable Player Award and led Phoenix to the 1993 NBA Finals, a run that remains one of the defining eras in franchise history. The passion Barkley brought to the court in the desert still echoes through his commentary today.

As a longtime analyst on TNT’s Inside the NBA, Barkley has built a reputation as one of the most influential voices in basketball media. With humor, criticism and perspective shaped by his playing career, he often drives the conversation around the modern NBA.
For that reason, many fans across the basketball world value Barkley’s commentary — including those in Phoenix who remember his dominant years in the desert.

Tuesday’s broadcast offers a rare blend of personalities. Vitale’s enthusiastic style, combined with Barkley’s blunt honesty and unpredictability, adds a different energy to the opening night of March Madness.
Barkley’s influence on basketball didn’t end when his playing career did. Instead, his time with the Suns helped shape the perspective that turned him into one of the sport’s most recognizable analysts.

When the game tips off in Dayton, that voice — one that has heavy Phoenix influence — will once again be part of one of basketball’s biggest stages.
