GLENDALE – Arizona State men’s basketball will be looking everywhere to find its next head coach, even possibly to the music industry. Sporting News reporter Kyle Odegard reported on Tuesday that five-time Grammy nominated artist Percy “Master P” Miller is interested in becoming ASU’s next head coach.

After the release of his biggest album, “MP da Last Don” which went 4x Platinum in the US, Miller joined the CBA’s Fort Wayne Fury as a backup guard. Soon afterwards, he was given multiple NBA opportunities. His first was with the Charlotte Hornets on a 10-day contract, but Miller’s biggest opportunity was on the Toronto Raptors training camp roster. The 6’4 guard got in for one preseason game and dropped eight points. Despite the impressive scoring burst, he was cut soon after.

Miller joined the IBL and ABA in the following years, but never got a real chance in either league. He went back to focus on other ventures but still had an interest in basketball. In 2008, he coached and recruited an AAU team that had future NBA players like DeMar DeRozan, Brandon Jennings and Lance Stephenson. DeRozan even called Miller a “father figure,” in a 2015 interview.

Arizona State Athletic Director Graham Rossini speaks to the media at Trophy Bar in Chandler for an ASU football pep rally celebrating their College Football Playoff Peach Bowl invitation on Dec. 18, 2024.
ASU athletic director Graham Rossini will have to make a call of whether to even consider Miller for the role. Seeing how Rossini went with a lesser known name in Kenny Dillingham to coach the football program following Herm Edwards’s departure doesn’t help Miller’s case. Rossini has done a stellar job rebuilding Arizona State’s athletic, and Miller is too much of an unknown for him to take a chance on the basketball program.
Miller would certainly do well in the recruiting space with his personality and past success in the basketball sphere, but with zero head coaching experience, probably an unlikely hire.
