Carroll suffered the injury during a live batting practice session on Tuesday, and will now miss some significant time this spring. Hamate injuries are notoriously tricky for hitters. The bone, located in the hand near the pinky, affects grip strength and bat control. Around the league, hitters returning from similar procedures often see temporary dips in slugging percentage and exit velocity. That matters for Arizona because Carroll isn’t just productive, he’s foundational. Carroll and Ketel Marte form the spine of an offense that relies on pressure with consistent hitting, stolen bases, and first-to-third aggression.

Carroll’s value goes beyond the box score. When he reaches, Chase Field feels faster. Pitchers rush, and infielders cheat. The ripple effect is real. The Diamondbacks’ run production spikes when their top two hitters set the table early in games. Remove Carroll, and opposing staffs can pitch differently. Locally, this tests Arizona’s depth. With Lourdes Gurriel Jr. already sidelined, the outfield mix becomes thinner and less dynamic. Nationally, it reshapes the NL playoff math. The margin between hosting October baseball and fighting for a Wild Card spot is razor thin, and if Carroll misses any significant time past Opening Day, it could be detrimental to how the Snakes operate starting.

For Arizona fans, the takeaway is twofold. First, recovery timelines for hamate surgeries are typically measured in weeks, not seasons, so hope remains. Second, this is a referendum on roster construction. Can Arizona manufacture offense without its catalyst, even for the time being? Fans who were eager to see Carroll participate in the WBC will unfortunately have to wait a little longer as this injury now sidelines him throughout the tournament. Only time will tell how this hand injury will linger, though the D-backs getting surgery on it now shows they aren’t taking the situation lightly.
