Diamondbacks 2026 infield picture with possible Bregman addition

Based on reports available so far, here is a look at what the Diamondbacks’ infield could look like in 2026 and whether the team could realistically pull it off.

As things stand, the projected infield includes Ketel Marte at second base, Geraldo Perdomo at shortstop and utility man Blaze Alexander at third base. Arizona would still need to fill the first base position while Tyler Locklear continues to recover from an arm injury.

So what are the options?

Alexander could handle first base duties when needed. He has played multiple positions and even logged time in the outfield despite never having played there in his major league career. It is clear the Diamondbacks value his versatility and view him as a true utility player capable of filling in wherever needed.

Another option is Jordan Lawlar, who has seen time at third base but not at first. As a young player still trying to establish his role, a position change could benefit him. Lawlar struggled defensively at third base late last season to the point he was moved to the DH position to finish off the year.

That still leaves third base open, which brings Alex Bregman into the conversation. Reports indicate the veteran is on the Diamondbacks’ radar and could be a potential target.

In 2025 with the Boston Red Sox, Bregman posted a .273 batting average with 18 home runs, 62 RBIs and a .821 OPS. He is also a two-time World Series champion with the Houston Astros, bringing championship experience to a young clubhouse. Despite controversy surrounding his name, Bregman has remained one of MLB’s most productive players.

The issue is payroll.

Would the Diamondbacks be able to support both Marte’s and Bregman’s contracts? ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel projects Bregman to receive a five-year, $170 million deal this offseason. Marte still has five years and $91 million remaining on his contract.

It is possible that acquiring Bregman would require trading Marte to reduce payroll. Carrying both contracts could be too much for Arizona if it continues to lower costs.

If Marte were dealt, the infield could look like this: a first base platoon of Alexander and Lawlar, Alexander at second base, Perdomo at shortstop and Bregman at third base. It would be a drastically different look from what Diamondbacks fans have seen in recent seasons.

Much of this remains hypothetical and Arizona could take a different approach to filling first base next year, as well as keeping Marte in the desert.

Still, the possibility of Bregman joining the Diamondbacks adds another intriguing layer to the offseason discussion.
