Lovullo told Arizona Sports that right-handers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly remain in fluid situations, acknowledging it could be a challenge to bring either pitcher back.
“Who knows where that’s going to go,” Lovullo said, according to Arizona Sports. “We’re all going to remain optimistic that they’ll remain Diamondbacks. But the reality is, they’re probably getting a little bit too big for what we can take care of.”

Gallen and Kelly are among the most sought-after starters on the market this offseason. Gallen declined a qualifying offer in late November, signaling his intention to test free agency. Kelly, traded to the Texas Rangers at the 2025 deadline, is also a free agent.
As Arizona navigates an offseason filled with uncertainty, most notably speculation surrounding a potential trade of All-Star Ketel Marte, the club’s pitching needs remain a central storyline.

Gallen and Kelly have been mainstays in the organization for several years, forming a one-two rotation punch that helped lead Arizona to the 2023 National League pennant. Gallen has relied on velocity and a sharp knuckle-curve, while Kelly has thrived through painted corners and deception. That contrast has anchored the rotation and contributed to the team’s success.
Losing both pitchers in the same offseason would make it significantly more difficult for Arizona to rebuild a depleted staff.
Lovullo did not rule out the possibility that either pitcher could still re-sign. Still, payroll limitations and each player’s rising market value could influence the Diamondbacks’ approach and force rotation changes.
Arizona is expected to remain a major factor in the offseason, not only for a possible blockbuster Marte trade, but also where its former aces ultimately land.
