According to Arizona Central’s reporter Nick Piecoro, right-handers Shane Baz and Ryan Pepiot are among the names being discussed in a possible deal for the All-Star infielder. While no agreement has been reached, multiple clubs have shown significant interest in Marte and Tampa Bay is believed to be willing to part with MLB-ready pitching to acquire him.
The Diamondbacks have not fully committed to trading their franchise second baseman, but with rotation help available, the possibility remains on the table.
Baz and Pepiot both have major league experience, meaning the D-backs would not need to send either pitcher to the minors for further development. Each has established himself as a viable big-league arm.

A former top prospect, Baz underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022 before returning in 2024. He posted a 4.87 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP and 176 strikeouts in 2025.
Pepiot, acquired by Tampa Bay from the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023, recorded a 3.86 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP and 167 strikeouts last season.
The Snakes may not be able to get their one-two punch of Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly this offseason, based on manager Torey Lovullo’s comments on Arizona Sports Thursday morning. With Arizona’s pitching staff already depleted, adding Baz and Pepiot would offer immediate support and long-term stability.

Losing Marte’s production would undoubtedly sting, but with young contributors such as Corbin Carroll, Geraldo Perdomo and Blaze Alexander emerging, the Diamondbacks retain offensive upside.
Any deal involving Marte would be a blockbuster and likely one of the most notable moves of the offseason. Players of his caliber rarely become available, which explains why clubs like the Rays are willing to include players like Baz and Pepiot.

The Diamondbacks remain one of the most closely watched teams this winter as they determine Marte’s future and work to address their needs.
