The Sun Devils and Rebels were tied 53-53 with ASU in control of the ball and five seconds left. ASU’s Gabby Elliott bobbled the ball on an attempted play, but with the shot clock winding down, Washenitz ran to the ball and threw a no-look, 3-pointer that went in.

Desert Financial Arena erupted as Washenitz’s game-winning shot lifted the Sun Devils to a 56-53 win.

Washenitz’s heads-up play quickly made the rounds in the sports world, with the highlight appearing on ESPNW, Barstool Sports and Bleacher Report. It even reached No. 1 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays.

“1-0 as a basketball coach, thanks to the Hail Marley!” Phoenix Mayor and special assistant coach Kate Gallego wrote in a post on X, celebrating the win and the play.

While Washenitz’s 3-pointer secured the win, it meant even more. The Sun Devils are now 5-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

The season is still young and there’s much more left to play, but the Molly Miller era of Sun Devils women’s basketball is off to the right start.

Arizona State will face Utah Tech next on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 6:30 p.m.
