The 31-year-old sustained the injury in the bottom of the sixth inning when he tried to avoid a collision with teammate Blaze Alexander, who was making a diving catch on a line drive. It was a noncontact injury and the outfielder lay on the ground for several minutes, clutching his knee.

Gurriel Jr. was eventually able to stand under his own power before carefully walking to the medical cart to be taken off the field.

Teammates appeared distraught as Gurriel Jr. was tended to, with Alexander remaining by his teammate’s side throughout the ordeal. Fans also expressed their worry for one of the team’s most beloved players, hoping the injury wasn’t as serious as it appeared.

Alexander said he didn’t know what transpired behind him after making his catch.

“I was kind of looking at the crowd,” Alexander said post-game on the situation, according to Diamondbacks On Sports Illustrated. “[I] started running in, I see [Geraldo] Perdomo running towards me, was like, ‘What’s going on?’ [I] look back and Gurriel was down… Just unfortunate. He’s one of the leaders of our team, a guy we need.”

While teammates and fans hoped to hear good news on Gurriel Jr.’s injury, D-Backs manager Torey Lovullo gave a somber update on the outfielder post-game, saying he would get imaging on Tuesday.

“Say some prayers for him,” said Lovullo, according to AZSports’ Alex Weiner. “It’s a situation where we’re gonna hope for the best. I don’t think it looks great.”

The Diamondbacks now await imaging results, hoping for the best as they brace for the possibility of losing one of their veteran leaders in the final stretch of the season.
