PHOENIX — The NFL Draft is set to kick off Thursday night, and the spotlight is on Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo and his potential in the professional field.
Spenser Tilus and guest speaker Eli Lederman, college football writer for ESPN, discussed on a Burn City Sports podcast where the Sun Devil’s star is projected to go in the draft.
There has been a lot of speculation on where Skattebo will land, with mock drafts showing him being picked up anywhere from the late first to even the fourth round — a wide range stemming from doubt of his success transitioning to the NFL.
Skattebo has shown a great display of explosiveness and grit on the field already, and his versatility as dual threat: as a traditional runner and as a reviever. He finished the 2024 season with 293 carries for 1,711 total yards and 21 touchdowns.
Tilus seems to believe the resume speaks for itself.
“He did everything, it felt like, for the Sun Devils. And he was impossible to tackle and he just showed that the versatility,” Tilus said. “I feel that he’s one of those guys that, maybe you’re not exactly sure where you put him or how you use him, but he’s a guy that’s going to find his way onto a football field.”
Lederman added onto this statement, alluding to his flexibility possibly being his greatest asset. However, acknowledged the skepticism and the reason some teams may hesitate.
“The fact that you don’t know if he is going to be an every-down back or more of a situational weapon. That’s probably why you are seeing anything from a first round grade to a day two and so on.”
The uncertainty could lead to a longer wait for Skattebo once names start coming across the board. But no matter where he lands, his college career and determination have shown he can do just about anything with the ball in his hands.
