PHOENIX — Just when it seemed like Phoenix Rising was on the verge of taking its second win of the season, it couldn’t hold on to its 2-0 lead and fall to Detroit City FC, 3-2.

The first 40 minutes of the match were slow, with only two yellow cards given to Detorit City’s Hys Williams in the 11th minute and Rising’s Noble Okello in the 15th minute. Rising struggled to find any rhythm offensively, with Detroit City maintaining most of the possession time. That is, until the 42nd minute.
Just as the half was about to end, Rising found itself in a groove, and Collin Smith would break the tie with a goal. Rising would take its lead into the second half and added another goal at the 71st minute, this time by Hope Avayevu. However, like every match, game, or sport, nothing is over until it’s over.

With only three minutes left in regulation, Detroit City’s offense exploded. Detroit City’s Darren Smith went off, scoring two goals at the 87th and 89th minutes of the match. With a 2-2 tie, Rising had no answer for Detroit City. At the 90th minute, Detroit City’s Jeciel Cedeno would score the winning goal. All of Detroit City’s goals were all made only three minutes one after the other in the last minutes of the match. Rising could not keep up, and what should have been a second win in back-to-back games ended up as its toughest loss this season.
Rising will need to put this match behind them as its U.S. Open Cup third-round match will be this Wednesday, April 16, against Tulsa FC.
