From college hardwoods to professional stadiums, women’s sports in the Phoenix area are experiencing a renaissance at all levels — and the movement shows no signs of slowing down.

At the professional level, the Phoenix Mercury remain a staple of the Valley’s sports scene, boasting a championship legacy and one of the WNBA’s most passionate fan bases. As the league enters a new era of expansion and national attention, Phoenix’s longtime presence as a “legacy market” puts it at the forefront of shaping the game’s future.

But the Mercury aren’t the only game in town.

Arizona is preparing to welcome Desert Dreams FC in the summer, a new professional women’s soccer club team joining the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL). The arrival marks a major step forward for the state’s visibility in the women’s game and offers fresh opportunities for local talent and fans alike.

At the collegiate level, growth is just as evident. Arizona State’s women’s basketballl team continues to attract top recruits under new leadership from Molly Miller, while Grand Canyon University has built a strong program of its own, recently earning national attention for its postseason performances and the addition of a star coach. Across the way, the University Arizona has also made waves in national championship appearances and recently made headlines again by hiring Becky Burke. These programs are helping redefine what success in women’s college basketball looks like in the Southwest.

It’s not just about wins and losses. The visibility and investment in women’s sports — from upgraded facilities to increased media coverage — reflect a cultural shift. More fans are watching. More young girls are inspired. More athletes are getting the platform they deserve.

With momentum building at every level, Arizona is no longer a quiet contributor — it’s quickly becoming one of the most exciting frontiers for women’s sports in the country.
