TEMPE — Arizona State football’s April Fools’ prank was meant to be a joke, but fans aren’t laughing—they’re intrigued.

On Tuesday morning, the Sun Devils’ official Twitter account posted a mockup of Mountain America Stadium featuring a bold maroon-colored playing field. “A new era for Mountain America Stadium, Coming this fall” the post read.

It didn’t take long for fans to catch on to the prank, but the reaction was far from what ASU might have expected. Many embraced the idea, calling for the university to make the maroon field a reality. Some pointed to Boise State’s famous blue turf as an example of how a non-traditional field design could set ASU apart, while others simply thought it looked “cool.”

“Obviously this is an April fools tweet but this would actually be cool,” one fan commented. Another wrote, “Love this April Fools joke so much. However, the end zones should be Yellow.”

The viral nature of the post even caught the attention of Boise State football’s official account, which humorously responded, “Cease and desist.” The Broncos have long been known for their blue turf, a defining feature of Albertsons Stadium.

Despite the enthusiasm, ASU is unlikely to break tradition with its classic green playing surface. NCAA regulations require fields to be a natural shade of green unless a waiver is granted—something Boise State received for its blue turf.

Still, the Sun Devils’ prank showed the power of creative engagement with fans. While a maroon field may never materialize, ASU’s ability to generate excitement—on and off the field—remains undeniable.
