Recap: Arizona Diamondbacks fall short on Saturday Night in loss to Cubs

The Arizona Diamondbacks showed their comeback ability, but their efforts fell short as they lost 4-3 to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday night.

Shota Imanaga was dealing for Chicago, as he went seven innings only giving up one run on three hits. Pfaadt on the other hand looked solid, until Kyle Tucker hit a two-run homerun off of him in the fifth inning. Pfaadt ended the day pitching six innings and giving up three runs on six hits.

Kyle Tucker, who was acquired in December from Houston, along with his homerun, had three hits in today’s contest. On the other end, newcomer Josh Naylor went 2-for-4 including a double. Unfortunately the D-Backs couldn’t make anything happen when it mattered, as they went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Late game dramatics:

Bottom of the ninth inning, who else but Eugenio Suárez, hits a two-run homerun to make it a 4-3 contest. (His fourth homerun in three games.) Ketel Marte with two outs drew a walk, leaving it up for Corbin Carroll.

Carroll, hitting a bouncing ball towards Dansby Swanson, seemingly looked safe while loading the bases. As Swanson turned towards third, he noticed D-Backs pinch runner Garrett Hampson overran third, far past the third base bag. Swanson quickly managed to get it over there in time for the last out of the game, another costly mistake for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

These ball clubs are both showing how talented each side is, regardless of its pitching or their position players. The Diamondbacks take on the Chicago Cubs in the final game of the 2025 MLB Opening Weekend tomorrow, Sunday, March 30th.
