Suns drop chippy 120-118 nail-biter to Grizzlies, swept in season series

PHOENIX — Just like their last matchup, Kevin Durant missed a 3-pointer at the top of the key to lose to the Memphis Grizzlies by two points. This time, 120-118.

Durant led the Suns all game with 35 points, five rebounds and five assists on 11-of-24 shooting. Devin Booker, who struggled out the gates, was instrumental in keeping Phoenix competitive, scoring 12 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter and adding nine rebounds and six assists. No other Sun scored more than 12 points with Bradley Beal out with a calf injury.

Ja Morant led the Grizzlies with 29 points and 12 assists to sweep Phoenix in their four-game season series. With All-Star center Jaren Jackson Jr. out for the game, six other Memphis players scored in double-figures, including end-of-bench guard Cam Spencer, who scored 11 of his 16 points in the second quarter.

Phoenix (30-35) close their road trip in Houston against the Rockets on Wednesday.

Grizzlies snag momentum in 3rd quarter

Cam Spencer hit another timely 3-pointer to close out the third quarter before getting in an altercation with Kevin Durant to give Memphis momentum and the lead ahead of the final quarter, 95-90.

Durant scored eight of his 28 game-leading points in the third quarter and was generally the only Sun to have anything going for them in the game. Devin Booker continued to struggle with 14 points and five turnovers but added eight rebounds and five assists on 5-of-14 shooting. Nick Richards notched another double-double with the Suns, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Memphis had five players in double-digits scoring and three others with nine points through three quarters, all led by Ja Morant with 19 points and 10 assists. Spencer’s 3-pointer to end the quarter was his fourth make in seven attempts for 14 points.

Spencer, Grizzlies erase Suns lead in 2nd quarter

Memphis guard Cam Spencer erupted for 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from deep in the second quarter to eliminate Phoenix’s lead ahead of halftime, 59-57.

Kevin Durant led all scorers into the break with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting including four 3-pointers. However, he was the only Sun in double figures as Grayson Allen trailed him with nine points, all of which were scored in the second quarter. Devin Booker struggled on the floor with seven points on 3-of-10 from the field but added five rebounds and three assists.

The Grizzlies got a huge boost from Spencer’s 11 second-quarter points but were led by Ja Morant with 13 points and four assists.

Durant, Suns roar past Grizzlies in 1st quarter

Kevin Durant scored four 3s for 14 points in the first quarter as Phoenix jumped out to a 16-point lead at one point before the Grizzlies cut the lead towards the end of the period, 34-26.

Durant was the only player with double figures in the game and shot 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-5 from deep. Tyus Jones and Nick Richards added six points each and four assists and seven rebounds respectively. Devin Booker started the game 0-for-4 from the field, including two missed 3-point attempts.

Ja Morant led Memphis with nine points after they started 2-for-11 from the field. He had a plus-minus rating of zero despite Memphis going down by as much as 16 at one point.

Injury report

Bradley Beal (left calf injury) was listed out ahead of the game; it’s the same injury that has been nagging at him for the better part of two weeks. Monte Morris (low back injury management), Cody Martin (G League – on assignment) and Jalen Bridges (G League – two-way) were out as well.

For Memphis, Jaren Jackson Jr. (left ankle sprain), Brandon Clarke (right knee soreness), Zach Edey (right ankle soreness) and Vince Williams Jr. (right foot soreness), Luke Kennard (low back soreness) and Santi Aldama (right calf strain) were all out.
