ASU blows game in 9th inning for first loss to Oral Roberts 8-7

Syndication: Arizona Republic

PHOENIX –Arizona State baseball had a comfortable two-run lead in the top of the ninth inning. Senior right-hander Will Koger needed one more out to secure the save and continue ASU’s undefeated streak. However, three walks later saw the bases loaded, and Oral Roberts didn’t waste it, hitting back-to-back singles to score three runs and eventually the 8-7 win.

In his last save appearance against Ohio State, Koger had similar struggles loading the bases. The right-hander balanced through the turbulence then but couldn’t survive similar struggles tonight.

Throughout the years, head coach Willie Bloomquist has struggled to find reliant arms in the bullpen, and this season is no different. The bullpen nullified a stellar day on the mound for junior left-hander Ben Jacobs.

Jacobs pitched five innings and struck out 11 Oral Roberts batters. The former UCLA Bruin dominated the mound and allowed the ASU offense to thrive off the backs of junior outfielder Isaiah Jackson, who recorded two hits and two RBIs.

The Sun Devils look for retribution against the Golden Eagles tomorrow at Phoenix Municipal Stadium at 1 pm.
