With the NBA trade deadline and All-Star break in the rearview mirror, Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant and his future with the franchise is still being questioned.

Following a trade deadline where Durant’s name was inexplicably thrown in trade conversations, the 36-year-old All-Star revealed that he never wanted to be traded from Phoenix at the deadline. Durant sat down with ESPN’s Malika Andrews on NBA Today and spoke about the situation and how it may affect his future with the Suns.

“You got to ask the front office about that,” Durant said about potentially being moved in the offseason. “I never planned on moving or getting traded. I didn’t ask for a trade from Phoenix.

“But, obviously, when you pay so much for a team and we’re not paying up to our expectations, somebody has to go. Probably should check in with those guys in the front office throughout the rest of the season and see how they feel about the team. I know that I’m going to keep trying to bring my best every single day. I let the higher ups focus on what’s next.”

Considering that Durant has historically controlled where he’d like to play whether through the trade market or free agency, many speculated that he requested a trade from Phoenix throughout their treacherous first half of the season. The Suns are currently 26-28 and the No. 11 seed in the Western Conference at the All-Star break.

However, the 15-time All-Star was just as surprised as anyone when he heard his name was being shopped at the trade deadline. At media day before the season, Durant, who is eligible for an extension with Phoenix, told the media that he planned on staying with the franchise for the entirety of his contract and would revisit it when the time comes, so as to just focus on basketball.

Durant was blindsided by what transpired at the deadline, which is why he is understandably more prudent when considering his future than he was before. At 36, Durant is averaging 27.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game this season.
