In what may have been the final walk-off at Oakland Coliseum after more than 50 years of baseball history, the A’s gave their fans a moment to remember. Facing the Texas Rangers in their final home series, former Grand Canyon University star Jacob Wilson delivered a game-winning single on the first pitch he saw with one out in the bottom of the ninth, lifting the A’s to a 5-4 victory and sending over 30,000 fans home happy.

Wilson began this season in Double-A, where he hit .455 over 22 games before being promoted in early May. He then joined the Las Vegas Aviators, where he continued his groove at the plate. Over 19 games in Triple-A, he hit .398 with a 1.083 OPS, recording hits in 21 of his final 22 games, including 11 multi-hit games.

His dominance in the minors was reminiscent of his senior year at GCU, where he achieved a .412 batting average and struck out only five times in 217 plate appearances.

Since his MLB call-up on July 19th, the 6th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft has continued to show flashes of his potential, hitting .231 across his first 18 games in the majors.

As the A’s play their final series in Oakland this week, they are expected to draw sold-out crowds, especially for Thursday’s afternoon game, as fans look to make their voices of displeasure heard to owner John Fisher. Next season, Wilson and the Athletics will embark on a new chapter, temporarily calling West Sacramento’s Sutter Health Park home while they await the completion of their future stadium in Las Vegas.
