GCU Men’s Basketball Strikes Gold in the Portal

Grand Canyon University basketball, on both the men’s and women’s sides, has turned transfer portal recruiting into an art form. GCU Men’s Basketball Head Coach Bryce Drew has had yet another successful offseason when it comes to recruiting. The roster looks as great as ever, resulting in the Lopes being considered a top-tier contender to win the Mountain West by many.

One look at the rosters throughout the years is telling: Drew and his staff clearly have a motive and intent for each and every player they sign. You don’t see them going after the top 5-star guys in the portal, and that’s because they don’t need to. Instead, they focus on fit, role, and physicality. They also want solid locker room guys to build groups that mix well together. These traits have led to their historical success since the Drew era began in 2020-2021.

This offseason’s portal class is a masterclass in targeted recruiting. Instead of simply hoarding talent, Drew’s staff addressed exact tactical needs: interior athleticism, veteran guard playmaking, and proven perimeter grit.

Omaha Biliew | Forward, 6’8”

 


The former top-15 national recruit arrives in Phoenix following high-major stints at Wake Forest and Iowa State. Biliew’s length, vertical athleticism, and rim-protecting ability make him a dynamic weapon on both ends of the floor. In a physical Mountain West Conference where frontcourt depth is essential, his interior presence will be crucial.

Tre Holloman | Guard, 6’2”

 

The type of veteran backcourt leader that GCU has become known for over the years. Transferring from a very successful Michigan State program, he brings extensive big-game experience, low-turnover playmaking, and 40% three-point shooting. Like Biliew, he is also a 2-way guy, giving you elite performance on both ends of the floor. His clutch play and leadership will fit right in, just as guards like Ray Harrison, Tyon Grant-Foster, and many more have done in the past.

Dan Skillings Jr. | Guard/Wing, 6’6”

 


Skillings Jr. makes the move from one Drew brother to another, transferring from Scott Drew’s Baylor squad after starting his college career at Cincinnati. Beyond the familial coaching connection, Skillings brings high-major athleticism, wing scoring (9.4 PPG, 5.7 RPG), and multi-positional defense to GCU’s perimeter. His 6-foot-6 frame fits seamlessly into the Lopes’ physical, high-intensity defensive scheme.

Dylan Darling | Guard, 6’2”

 

Darling is another physical, high-motor guard with proven perimeter shooting ability across multiple programs. Beyond his range behind the arc, he excels at driving downhill and finishing in traffic. Expected to step into a high-energy sixth-man role, Darling provides relentless defensive pressure and an instant spark off the bench.

Blake Barkley | Forward, 6’8”

 

Barkley brings additional frontcourt toughness and efficient production. After playing at Northwestern and averaging 14.6 points and 5.8 rebounds at ETSU, he offers high-efficiency interior scoring (58.9% FG) and relentless rebounding. His physical presence gives the Lopes non-negotiable depth in the paint.
