Earlier in September, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo had hinted at the possibility of Drey Jameson making a long-awaited return to the mound in the Arizona Fall League. However, this no longer appears to be true. According to a team official, “there is no plan for Jameson to pitch in the Fall League at this time,” as reported by Paul Beckman of Arizona Diamondbacks SI.

Jameson, a first-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, showed tremendous promise early in his career. He made his MLB debut in 2022, delivering an impressive seven-inning shutout against the Padres and quickly becoming a key arm in the Diamondbacks’ bullpen. Unfortunately, his progress was interrupted in July 2023 when he was placed on the 60-day injured list with a torn UCL, which ultimately required Tommy John surgery in September after conservative treatments failed.

Though Jameson had been ramping up his recovery, including throwing bullpen sessions twice a week for a total of 11 sessions, according to Jack Sommers, his timeline for game action has been adjusted. As of now, Jameson will not be participating in the Arizona Fall League, which begins in less than two weeks. The league, known for showcasing top prospects, would have provided an ideal environment for Jameson to rebuild his arm strength and regain his form under the watchful eye of the Diamondbacks’ development staff.

Before his injury, Jameson posted a 3.32 ERA across 40 innings in 2023, serving as both a starter and reliever. He had established himself as a reliable pitcher with a career ERA of 2.63 and a 6-1 record.

While Jameson’s absence from the Arizona Fall League is a setback, his ongoing bullpen work remains a positive sign in his recovery journey. Jameson is one of three pitchers that the Diamondbacks currently have on the IL, with the two others being Bryce Jarvis and Kyle Nelson
