Durant now has 489 points, beating out Leslie’s 488 points that stood since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Durant has played in the four Olympics since, including this year’s 2024 Paris Olympic Games to overtake her record. He is searching for his USA men’s basketball record fourth gold medal in this summer’s tournament. Leslie won four golds with the women’s team: 1996 (Atlanta), 2000 (Sydney), 2004 (Athens), and 2008 (Beijing).

Durant entered tonight’s quarterfinals game against Brazil needing six points to surpass Leslie. Coming off the bench, Durant only scored two points in the first half on free throws, but scored four quick points in his first few minutes in the second half. He broke the record with an easy two-handed dunk with 3:06 go in the third quarter to put the U.S. up 86-59.

This comes one game after Durant surpassed Carmelo Anthony for the most rebounds in USA men’s basketball history.

The U.S. is blowing out Brazil and if the result holds, the Americans will play Serbia in the semifinals on Thursday.
