Without 2024 first-round pick Ryan Dunn due to knee soreness, Jalen Bridges led the Suns with 16 points and Isaiah Wong finished with 15 as a substitute in the defeat for the Suns (2-3). David Roddy clinched 11 points for Phoenix who shot 28-for-68 (41.2%) from the field and 10-for-36 (27.8%) from three.
Both teams fought neck-and-neck, Kings break away late
Off to a quick start, Roddy and Robert Franks combined for 12 points before the Kings would keep fighting back on the ensuing play. The Suns’ second round pick in this year’s draft, Oso Ighodaro, served up his teammates with four assists in the first quarter and nine overall in the matinee.
After a decorated collegiate career at Gonzaga, Timme was a strong presence in the paint on both ends of the floor, collecting 12 points and five rebounds in the first half. Going undrafted last year, he played for the Milwakee Bucks G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, before suffering a season-ending left foot fracture.
Leading 40-38 going into halftime, Phoenix turned the ball over 10 times which was a problem that would come back to bite them in the end. With the Suns falling into mental lapses when in possession, Kings had eight steals throughout the game.
Still unable to pull away from the other, both teams would score back-and-forth in the second and third quarter.
The lead flipped multiple times in the opening of the fourth frame before Sacremento took over, outscoring the Suns 21-12 from the 7:24 mark onward. Ellis scored seven points and Crawford and Jones had six each in the final quarter of the game.
Not starting for their respective teams, Ellis and Wong showcased their skills in their final summer league game. With these performances, the Suns and Kings’ coaching staffs will consider if they have what it takes to crack the preseason and opening night rosters, head to the G League or be cut.
Sacremento ended with shooting 34-for-65 (52.3%) from the field and going 7-for-18 (38.9%) from three. The Kings led in rebounds 33-32, and the Suns fell into 22 fouls compared to just 11 by Sacramento.
