This year, the Commanders drafted former Arizona State quarterback and last year’s Heisman trophy winner at LSU, Jayden Daniels, with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

In an interview Up and Adams Show released today with Kay Adams, Durant said he’s looking forward to the next era of Commanders football under Daniels and has a lot of respect for him coming into the NFL, even comparing Daniels to himself.

“I was a fan of the Heisman winner this past year,” Durant said. “He’s like the KD of college football last year with his body type. You watch him on TV, it’s easy to watch their team because of how he plays, and so hopefully he brings that same type of enthusiasm to the game to Washington. Everybody’s rallying around him. We feel like we got a player that can take us somewhere now.”

Adams then asked Durant to elaborate on his comparison of Daniels to himself.

“I felt like he pops off the screen when you turn on your TV,” Durant said. “A guy that size, that can move that well, at that position, you tend to look at that body frame as like a wide receiver or skill position, but to command the offense, being able to move the football up the field as a quarterback, that was impressive to see.

“I didn’t really know Jayden as much before this past season, and then I started watching him more, and I’m like, ‘Wow, he really impressed me.’ First of all, you can he tell loves football. And then secondly, you can tell he’s been working at football since he was a kid. All that stuff, I can see on through TV.”

The 6-4, 210-pound Daniels finished his Heisman season with 4,946 total yards. His 3,812 passing yards ranked fifth in the country and his 40 passing touchdowns were second. He also rushed for 1,134 yards, good for 31st in the nation. Daniels led the Tigers to a 9-3 record.

Daniels transferred to LSU in 2022 after three seasons at ASU, where he played in 29 total games. For his Sun Devil career, Daniels recorded 6,024 passing yards and 32 passing touchdowns and rushed for 1,288 yards and 13 touchdowns.
