On Friday in Minnesota, Phoenix Mercury guard Sophie Cunningham went 3-of-6 from beyond the arc to reach her 201st career 3-pointer — becoming the fourth player in Mercury history to achieve that feat.

Cunningham, 27, has been in Phoenix for the entirety of her career. The 6-foot-1 guard was the 13th overall pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft, and is now spending her sixth season with the Mercury.

The former Missouri Tiger has shot 35.9% from long range on 3.7 attempts throughout her career. This small feat doesn’t mean much for Cunningham, however. As Phoenix just lost its fourth straight game in Minnesota, the focus is solely on bouncing back.

“It’s great, but for me, it’s all about winning,” said Cunningham. “We’ve had a rough stretch this road trip, so it’s kind of hard to celebrate those little milestones. I’m very blessed that I have teammates around that find me, but at the end of the day if we’re not winning it doesn’t really matter.”

Cunningham was on Phoenix’s 2021 finals team, and a year later, finished third in Most Improved Player voting.

Although Cunningham is averaging the least amount of points (9.6) since her 2022 season, she’s expanded her versatility to fill the team needs. She’s become a swiss-army-knife that can play any position on the floor and guard bigger wings, while always brining infectious energy as a swing starter.
